Saks High School is looking to win the statewide competition to renovate its football stadium

SAKS, Ala. (WBRC) – Saks High School students need your help to win a football stadium renovation.

The school is ranked in the top 16 in the T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Contest and is the only school from Alabama to do so.

Alphonso Freeney, head coach at Saks High School says it’s about giving these students and their community something to be proud of.

“I think it will help bring the community back together. It will help us have more community events here on this field,” said Coach Freeney.

Coach Freeney saw the T-Mobile competition as an opportunity to help his players and students.

“I just wrote an essay about Saks and the state of the program. The call came in, I answered and they said, “Hey coach, we just want to congratulate you, you’re one of sixteen finalists in the country and that’s how it came about,” Freeney said.

With major repairs needed, Coach Freeney says an upgrade to the stadium is long overdue.

“You know, we’re still the same old Saks. Then as you move on, you have Jacksonville High School, new turf and new things in their stadium. Then you go further down 21 and you have Piedmont. So right now 21, you can just see which stadiums and stuff like that. We’re kind of at a disadvantage,” Freeney said.

Coach Freeney is a Florida native with top-notch facilities. He understands the benefits of new equipment and the economic impact of winning this competition.

“So many events could take place on a grass field. You could store so many things on it, different sports that offer different income opportunities. Not just for the school, but also for the district and this district. “So I think winning would be very significant not only for our school but for the entire district,” Freeney said.

Coach Freeney, along with his coaching staff, says there is only so much they can do for the stadium.
