Third City Community Clinic partners with national programs to offer free prescriptions

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – Third City Community Clinic is partnering with national programs to help Nebraskans get free prescriptions for those in need.

According to the clinic, in the last six months, over 300 central Nebraskans have received completely free prescriptions because of Americares and Dispensary of Hope.

Both Americares and Dispensary of Hope help provide medications to underprivileged people. Misty Schaecher, Third City’s executive director, said Americares is also helping prepare Project Connect, an event dedicated to providing services to those who are homeless or in need with prescriptions.

“We can get more than just medication, but we can’t control what they get each week. Each week it’s a completely different list that you sort by case. “So we’re preparing for Project Connect next week by using all of the Americares items that were over-the-counter,” Schaecher said.

Dispensary of Hope has to pay $7,500 a week to get medications like insulin. Kelli Eriksen, a nurse at Third City, said this can have a big impact on her patients taking insulin as prescribed.

Eriksen said if people can’t afford insulin, they can try to ration it, but that’s not healthy for them and can cause problems.

“It is important that they check their blood sugar levels and administer their insulin according to their blood sugar levels so that they do not have hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia episodes,” Eriksen said.

If you would like to donate to the Third City Community Clinic, staff recommend going to their website here. If you would like to donate items, they recommend bringing them to the clinic.
