Dunbar High senior football players get 10 games despite Milton delays

FORT MYERS, Fla. – As a senior playing football, you have to be able to show off on the field… That’s the most important thing.

That talent on the roster translates to scholarships, so these guys don’t want to waste time despite back-to-back hurricanes.

“The last four games we really want to play,” said Austin Price, quarterback of the Dunbar High School football team. “We want to win too. So we try hard.”

He says when the hurricanes hit Southwest Florida they couldn’t officially train, so it was time to learn their craft.

“We have leaders out there,” Price said. “Make sure everyone sees their film.”

The Florida High School Athletic Association extended the football season by a week. During a conference call, a representative told the media that overtime could be used as a catch-up game or as a bye week before the playoffs.

Coach Sam Brown says this decision makes it fair for the boys to play all ten games.

“Just for our general program, we wanted to cancel the North Fort Myers game, which would have been our senior night,” Coach Brown said.

The thought of missing those games hurt, but with overtime, the team doesn’t have to miss a single game.

Coach Brown says it’s bigger than football and the team and the boys’ families are all his family.

“It’s all about family and culture and making sure their family is straight and anyone who needs something runs over and brings it to him,” Brown says.

“I want to be great in this sport one day, but if not, at least I’ll pass it on to the next generation.”
