State regulators find open doors at a daycare center where a toddler wandered into traffic

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – State regulators say they have found additional safety issues at a Greenville day care center where a child was able to run into a busy street two months ago.

The state Department of Health has not yet released its findings about what happened to Marley Burgess on Aug. 13 at KinderCare.

The three-year-old was found in the middle of Stantonsburg Road by a passing motorist who stopped and pulled him to safety.

Records show DHHS staff have made at least three unannounced visits to the daycare since then. They found violations in two of them.

The latest violation was discovered during a visit last Wednesday. According to DHHS, during a food truck delivery, both the front and front doors were left open with no one supervising them.

During an unannounced visit on September 24th, DHHS found a child care worker sleeping and a photograph was taken on September 17th. KinderCare said the teacher no longer works at the facility.

DHHS has not yet announced when the investigation into the missing child will be completed.
