Honda recalls 720,000 cars due to leaking fuel pumps

Honda will recall about 720,000 vehicles in the U.S. because their fuel pumps may leak, the automaker announced Tuesday.

Normally, the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announces vehicle recalls, but Honda notified the press about it before the agency made it public.

The recall applies to some, but not all, examples of:

“Cracks can form inside the fuel pump due to a defective high pressure fuel pump core. During vehicle operation, these cracks can grow and lead to fuel leaks; smell of fuel when idling or driving; and the risk of fire, accident or injury,” the company says.

Dealers will inspect the fuel pumps and replace any suspect parts.

Recall repairs are always free.

Automakers attempt to notify owners of recalled vehicles, but these efforts are not always 100% effective. To check if your car is part of a recall, try our simple VIN check tool in our recall center.
