The sheriff’s office is asking for help with a murder investigation

The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Wednesday to provide an update on its homicide investigation into the death of 35-year-old Dustin Kjersem of Belgrade.

Kjersem’s body was found on Saturday, October 12, 2024, in a tent approximately 2.5 miles above Moose Creek Road. Captain Nathan Kamerman said during the press conference that Kjersem was last seen on Thursday afternoon, October 10th. He was driving a black 2013 Ford F-150 with a black topper and silver aluminum ladder rack.

Kamerman said an autopsy showed Kjersem suffered “multiple lacerations” that led to his death. He said the sheriff’s office is asking the community for help and wants to hear from anyone who:

  • Was in the Moose Creek area any time from Thursday evening, October 10th to Saturday morning, October 12th
  • Anyone who has trail cameras or trail cameras in the Moose Creek area, even if the footage seems irrelevant
  • Anyone with cameras in their cars traveling in the Moose Creek area during this time period
  • Anyone who has seen Kjersem’s truck in the area
  • Anyone who has seen anything unusual or unusual around Moose Creek.

“Think about the whole canyon,” said Cpt. said Kamerman. “If you have seen anything strange in the canyon area or around town with his truck, please contact us.”

Kjersem’s sister Jillian Price also spoke during the press conference: “Dustin was a great boy. He was born here in Bozeman and worked all over the valley… He was a hardworking, skilled craftsman. He was a…“loving, helpful and adoring father who in no way deserved this.

The sheriff’s office said in a follow-up post on Facebook: “Even the smallest detail could be critical to the investigation.”
