Wolters Kluwer AI Labs marks the first year of collaboration to develop new, responsible AI capabilities for UpToDate

AI Labs for UpToDate has developed faster AI-powered search functionality; is now testing GenAI-based features to support medication requests and explore expert-led clinical prompts

WALTHAM, Mass., October 17, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Wolters Kluwer Health celebrates the first year of AI Labs for UpToDate® with the delivery of new AI capabilities designed to support smarter clinical decision-making. AI Labs is an experimental resource that puts healthcare customers at the heart of innovation and helps test and provide feedback on new and prototype AI-powered clinical decision support technologies. UpToDate Enterprise Edition customers now have access to AI-powered search capabilities developed in AI Labs, enabling providers to provide even faster answers to clinical questions. AI Labs is now testing new features leveraging generative AI (GenAI), including advanced drug queries and intelligent guided questions with prompts based on expert content from UpToDate.

“Our investment in AI Labs has yielded new AI-powered capabilities that deliver what providers want most: faster answers to clinical questions, delivered in a responsible and verified manner, leveraging trusted, evidence-based content from UpToDate they rely on rely on patient care,” said Greg SamiosPresident and CEO of Clinical Effectiveness, Wolters Kluwer Health. “We continue our commitment to investing in more innovative AI-powered solutions to impact the way care is delivered and address today’s complex healthcare challenges.”

A framework for AI-powered healthcare enables new solutions for clinicians

The Wolters Kluwer framework for AI-powered healthcare is built on four pillars that reflect the priorities for healthcare providers and organizations: rapid responses, clinical advice, workflow integration, and analytics to show return on investment (ROI). The framework is delivered through continuous, responsible innovation in AI Labs and collaboration with healthcare customers and technology partners, as well as industry leaders and organizations.

AI Labs for UpToDate will next work with UpToDate Enterprise Edition customers and partners to intelligently retrieve precise drug-related insights. Because drug-related questions make up a significant portion of questions asked in clinical care, testing will focus on smarter ways to succinctly answer questions about medications, such as dosage.

To support improved care, UpToDate AI Labs will also test Guided Questions, a feature that provides clinically relevant prompts or suggested next steps in the context of a user’s initial inquiry based on GenAI capabilities. Guided questions allow users to interact with UpToDate more naturally, just as they would with an experienced clinician colleague.

Responsible use of AI is the key to successful use in healthcare

“AI in healthcare will reach its full potential when it can be demonstrated to benefit the hospital, the clinician and the patient,” said Dick Taylor, MD, chief clinical informatics officer of Washington University in St. Louis and BJC Healthcare. “AI has yet to be fully deployed and integrated into patient care, in part due to legitimate concerns about the reliability of the clinical guidelines generated and the underlying content sets on which these models are based.”
