Humboldt native Ginkgo Torquemada has been living in Sunny Brae for a few months and is a DJ at Humboldt Hot Air, the community radio station that helped organize the event.

“People just deserve to have art and music, and there shouldn’t always be a financial reason for doing something,” Torquemada said. “We do this because we want community and we want people to be able to experience music and the fusion of music.”

Shiny Eyes, an experimental electronic group consisting of Sean Powers and Robert Tripp, performed in light rain using turntables, cassette tapes, a keyboard synthesizer, a modular synthesizer and a filtered microphone. They have been making music together for 30 years and their mutual trust allows them to completely improvise their sets.

“I think it takes time to get along,” Powers said. “Especially people who have been making music for a long time, when they get together there’s no such thing as an ego… you let that happen, then eventually you’ll fit together.”
