Syracuse University fraternity suspended after “disgusting” videos posted online

Syracuse University has suspended an on-campus fraternity after videos posted online showed students being harassed and mistreated.

In a letter to campus Wednesday, Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud said the “disgusting” videos “endanger the well-being of some of our students.” He said the videos were taken at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house.

“I am outraged by the actions shown in these videos and condemn this behavior,” Syverud said in the letter. “The university has issued an immediate interim suspension halting all Phi Kappa Psi activities. This suspension will remain in effect while the University conducts an immediate and thorough investigation. The Phi Kappa Psi National Office has also ordered the chapter to cease and desist from all activities.”

The videos appear to show two students lying on the floor while at least one of them vomits on them. Another student is then seen tied to a pole with his mouth taped shut.

“Hazing and related actions that endanger our students constitute a serious violation of both University policy and New York law,” Syverud said.

The university asks anyone with information to contact the university’s Department of Public Safety or Community Standards. All reports will be treated confidentially.

Letter from Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud

Dear students, teachers and staff:

The University has recently been made aware of videos showing abhorrent behavior that endangers the welfare of some of our students. The videos in question show alleged acts at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house.

I am outraged by the actions shown in these videos and condemn this behavior. The university has issued an immediate interim suspension halting all activities of Phi Kappa Psi. This suspension will remain in effect while the University conducts a prompt and thorough investigation. Phi Kappa Psi’s national office has also ordered the chapter to cease and desist from all activities. Hazing and related actions that endanger our students constitute a serious violation of both University policy and New York law.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Community Standards have already launched an investigation. DPS also notified and involved the Syracuse Police Department because the activities observed on video could be considered criminal offenses. DPS and Community Standards have jointly begun collecting evidence and will interview students associated with Phi Kappa Psi, including members, supporters and people who have come forward as witnesses. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against all individuals involved.

While this investigation continues, our priority is supporting all affected students. This also includes providing affected students with the necessary resources and services. If you or someone you know has information, please contact Community Standards or DPS. Your reporting will be treated confidentially.

The university will provide further information on this if necessary.

Sincerely,

Chancellor Kent Syverud
