Cool mornings with pleasantly sunny afternoons for the rest of the week

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Thursday morning brought SWLA its coolest temperatures since spring, but plenty of sunshine will keep you comfortable.

Don’t forget your jacket out the door this morning! A slow but steady warm-up should take us out of the cool morning temperatures with much calmer winds. Plenty of sunshine is expected to bring afternoon high temperatures back towards the mid-70s, making for another beautiful day to enjoy the outdoors. As winds ease, yesterday’s additional fire threat has passed, but fire bans remain in effect for many of our communities. Remember to keep an eye on current advisories and exercise caution outdoors while enjoying the beautiful weather.

Sunny and pleasant conditions are likely to remain with us for at least the rest of this week and even into the weekend as temperatures slowly rise again. However, the return of further moisture will be a very slow process without the breeze turning more southerly and dry conditions could continue well into next week.

The disadvantage of the dry weather remains the lack of rain, which is still missing in the 10-day forecast. The wind will not be as breezy on Thursday, so the fire danger will decrease somewhat. However, still be very careful when doing outdoor activities and it is still a good idea not to burn yourself. With still no rain in sight, an extension or worsening of the moderate drought we find ourselves in this week is quite possible. Burn bans are now in effect for the communities of Jeff Davis, Allen and Vernon, and more could be coming.

There are a few areas in the tropics where development is being observed, but nothing that is overly affecting SWLA or even the Gulf. According to the NHC, the likelihood of tropical development in the southern Caribbean is low this week as a widespread low pressure area could form. Still, models disagree about whether development will occur and whether whatever emerges is likely to move to Central America. Another wave is moving westward in the tropical Atlantic. Some development could be possible later this week as it approaches the Leeward Islands, but the system remains disorganized so far and the chances are diminishing. Plus, it’s several thousand miles from SWLA, so there’s no need to worry. But we’ll see what happens. The rest of the basin is calm and no development is expected over the next week.
