Starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh as lovers who face life’s challenges together, We Live in Time is a certified weeper. Given her relationship problems and Almut’s (Florence Pugh) battle with cancer, arriving at the theaters with a box of tissues in hand would probably be a wise decision.

A romance in which one of the partners gets cancer – we’ve certainly seen that before. But “Irreplaceable You” offers a twist on the devastating romantic picture by focusing not on how the couple deals with the idea of a terminal illness, but on what comes next for the survivor. When Abbie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) finds out she has a deadly form of cancer, one of her biggest worries (besides her deteriorating health, of course) is what will happen to her fiancé Sam (Michiel Huisman). As her illness progresses, she sets out to find a new partner for him to love after he dies, so she can die knowing he won’t be alone. Supported by strong performances from Mbatha-Raw and Huisman, “Irreplaceable You” is the perfect watch if you’ve had a few glasses of wine and are in desperate need of a good cry.

“About Time” (Prime Video)

In About Time, Tim Lake (Domnhall Gleeson) learns a valuable lesson about fully appreciating every day of his life – even as he discovers on his 21st birthday that he has the power to travel back in time to change events on any given day. At first he uses these powers for selfish reasons, including getting multiple chances to woo Mary (Rachel McAdams). But the more he matures, the more he sees his gift as an opportunity to appreciate each day instead of just trying to manipulate it into what he thinks his life should look like. “About Time” shares a serious sentimentality about relationships with “We Live in Time,” as well as the presence of two incredibly likeable artists who give Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh a run for their money.

Based on the equally touching novel by Nicholas Sparks, “The Notebook” tells the love story of Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) from their teenage years in 1940s South Carolina to old age. What’s so sad about that, you may ask? Well, we learn about their relationship because at the nursing home, Noah regularly tells Allie her story, hoping that hearing about the love they shared will give her an all-too-rare moment of clarity outside the fog of her dementia disappearing and reminding her to him. From start to finish, The Notebook is one of the most emotional cinematic romances of the 21st century.

We’ve seen what happens in a movie when one of the romantic leads becomes seriously ill after they fall in love. But what about a relationship that has broken down and where the dramatic hospital stay brings the two ex-partners back together? In “The Big Sick” – which is based on the real-life relationship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon – Kumail and Emily (Zoe Kazan) immediately hit it off and start dating. But they soon break up, mainly because Kumail is torn between his desire to have a relationship with her and his reluctance to cause a stir with his traditional Pakistani family. It’s only when Emily is put into an induced coma to ward off a serious infection that Kumail begins to understand exactly what she means to him. “The Big Sick” is sweet, but it also has a sense of humor that’s so dark that it doesn’t become saccharine.

Based on the best-selling novel by John Green, “The Fault in Our Stars” takes the traditional motif of terminal illness in a romantic tale and transports it to a youth setting. When Hazel’s (Shailene Woodley) thyroid cancer spreads to her lungs, she joins a support group for teens with cancer – where she meets Gus (Ansel Elgort), who lost a leg to cancer but has since recovered. The two quirky teenagers discover they have a lot in common and begin seeing each other more often, even as the shadow of Hazel’s prognosis hangs heavily over their relationship. And besides, Gus’s health is much more precarious than either of them had imagined. Even though “The Fault in Our Stars” follows the path charted by many romantic films before it, it still packs quite an emotional punch.
