An investigation is underway after someone shot at an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office speed trailer in Byrneville.

Just before midnight Tuesday, ECSO received a report of shots fired in the area of Byrneville Road and McBride Road. The caller told dispatchers they believed someone was deer hunting at night.

According to ECSO spokesman Morgan Lewis, officers arrived and located several shell casings in the area.

“We discovered a bullet hole in the speed trailer, but it still appeared to be functional,” Lewis said. “Someone may have been chasing a deer, but they hit our trailer instead.”

On Wednesday, the speed enforcement trailer was still located on Byrneville Road south of McBride Road. It appeared to be functional except for a small piece of evidence tape (pictured below).

The speed trailers were put into service after Sheriff Chip Simmons took office. They can be used in areas with known or citizen-reported speeding problems. The trailers display the speed of passing vehicles and are equipped with small flashing red and blue LED lights to attract the driver’s attention.

Anyone with information about the speed trailer shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP or ECSO at (850) 436-9620.
