Midland College is awarding a record amount of scholarship money to students

MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) – Midland College has reached a historic milestone.

They have awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships for their fall 2024 semester, the most in the school’s history.

Midland College says the increase is due to several factors.

A big problem is that the scholarship application process is no longer necessary.

“We were able to identify students who would be eligible for scholarships based on their financial aid status and whether they were enrolled in courses,” said Megan Brincks, dean of outreach and financial aid at Midland College.

A few years ago, Midland College eliminated the student scholarship application and automated part of that process.

To be eligible, MC students must have completed their FAFSA or TASFA and be enrolled in at least six credit hours, then they can be designated as eligible for scholarships.

Brincks says this process helps students who are unfamiliar with the scholarship process or don’t know what questions to ask.

“If we can remove even one small hurdle for them, providing these resources will allow them to really focus on school and their classroom work,” Brincks said.

Students can use these funds for everything from tuition to books to school supplies.

These scholarships can be either recurring or one-time.

If students receive a recurring scholarship, they may be required to meet certain GPA requirements to remain eligible.

“With our recurring scholarships, one of the students’ most important responsibilities is to ensure that they successfully complete all of their courses, hopefully with lots of A’s and B’s on their transcript, thereby maintaining a really high grade point average.”

So far, Midland College has received great response from students.

“Every time we tell a student that they are eligible for a scholarship, whether they expected it or not, there is great gratitude and great motivation. I think it really shows the students that we believe in them,” Brincks said.

MC is currently the only school in the region to award scholarships in this manner.

“We would like to award more scholarships every year and every semester,” Brincks said.

For the entire 2024-2025 school year, Midland College is expected to receive more than $2.5 million in scholarships.
