Chatfield 40, Cannon Falls 8

CHATFIELD — This is a clear victory.

Chatfield, which finished second in the state in Class 2A, blasted eighth-ranked Cannon Falls 40-8.

It was the Gophers’ defense that stood out the most. It held one of the state’s best rushing teams to just 135 yards. And for the first time in forever, Cannon Falls didn’t have a rushing touchdown.

Chatfield held district rushing leader Preston Schoenfelder to 48 yards on 11 carries.

“Our defense was phenomenal tonight,” Chatfield coach Jeff Johnson said.

The win ended the regular season for both teams. Chatfield enters the playoffs at a perfect 8-0, while Cannon Falls is 6-2.

Ben Carrier had a whopping 208 yards on eight carries and three touchdowns for Chatfield. Carson Rowland had 114 yards on nine carries and three touchdowns. The Gophers finished the game with 406 yards on the ground as Cannon Falls had no answer to their tough running game.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under the Staff headline. Often the title “staff” is used when paraphrasing basic short messages that come from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. Sometimes this byline is used when a news story includes multiple authors or when the story is created by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, this will be noted in the story.
