One of the best horror thrillers of all time has to be It Follows, and I was excited when it landed on a free streaming service earlier this month. This film is perfect for anyone who wants to be truly scared when Halloween is around the corner.

“It Follows” centers on a young woman named Jay Height (Maika Monroe) who becomes the target of a supernatural being after a sexual encounter. Jay goes on a date with a boy (Jake Weary) who suddenly reveals that he is being stalked by an invisible force. After a frightening and cryptic warning, he transfers the curse to Jay, which is transmitted through sexual intimacy.

As the creature takes on various forms – often like people from Jay’s past or strangers – it pursues her relentlessly. With the help of her friends, Jay must come to terms with the terrifying reality that the creature is always close behind her, waiting to claim her life unless she finds a way to break the curse.

“Jennifer’s Body” (2009)

If you need something with a little more comedy, then Jennifer’s Body should be your next watch. “The Conjuring” has to be one of my favorite horror films ever, and it is perfect for Halloween. This supernatural horror is based on the real case files of renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The story centers on the Perron family, who move into an old farmhouse in Rhode Island in 1971. Shortly after she settles in, she begins to experience increasingly disturbing and violent paranormal activity. Desperate for help, they call Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) to investigate.

As the Warrens learn of the house’s dark history, they discover that a malevolent spirit connected to a witch named Bathsheba is terrorizing the family. The Warrens have no choice but to confront this evil force and free the Perrons from their clutches.

One of the highest-rated horror films of the last decade, The Babadook deserves to be seen, especially during the scariest time of the year. This psychological horror explores grief, trauma and motherhood through a dark, supernatural lens.

The story follows Amelia (Essie Davis), a widowed mother struggling to raise her troubled six-year-old son Samuel (Noah Wiseman). Samuel is plagued by nightmares and a strong fear of monsters, which puts a strain on their relationship. One night, Samuel finds a mysterious pop-up book titled “Mister Babadook,” which features a fearsome, shadowy creature.

After reading the book, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is real and will harm them. Strange and disturbing events soon begin to occur in their home, and Amelia herself begins to feel the eerie presence of the Babadook.

One of the first found footage films I saw was Grave Encounters, and it gave me nightmares for weeks (yes, really). There’s just something about it that made me feel bad, and that’s probably because the characters weren’t able to escape.

Grave Encounters follows a group of filmmakers who produce a reality television show about paranormal investigations. In their latest episode, they investigate an abandoned psychiatric hospital that is said to be haunted. The team, led by host Lance Preston (Sean Rogerson), locks themselves in the hospital for the night, hoping to capture supernatural activity.

Initially skeptical, they stage fake ghost encounters for entertainment. But as the night progresses, they experience truly disturbing paranormal events. The team quickly realizes that the hospital has trapped them in a nightmarish, maze-like room.
