Shocking video shows 20-year-old tourist being swept away by massive wave

A 20-year-old man was swept away by a gigantic wave while posing for vacation photos – which was captured by his friends standing helplessly nearby.

According to Mirror, Roni Josua Simanjuntak was visiting the Indonesian coast with a group of friends on Sunday when he decided to take a photo of the waves crashing on the rugged coast of Kedung Tumpang Beach in East Java.

The water was calm at first and some of Roni’s friends were swimming off the shore’s massive rocks. But the calm waters soon became unsettled.

A video of the horrific incident posted on social media shows the moment Roni was caught by a massive wave and dragged into the Indian Ocean.

In the video, Roni can be seen holding his arms above his head at the precipice of a massive rock formation – his group of friends stand further away, a safe distance from the water.

You can see the wave swelling behind Roni, who is completely clueless. The force of the water throws Roni forward onto his hands and knees and he apparently slides down the rock face and into the rough water.

Witnesses can be heard laughing as he was knocked off his feet – but the laughter stopped when they realized Roni was nowhere to be seen.

Towards the end of the video posted by Mak Lambe Turah, the cameraman zooms in on something floating in the water and being pulled from the shore into the sea. Viewers apparently believed it was Roni’s body.

Authorities were still searching Wednesday but said they would call off the operation if he was not found by Sunday.

“The waves were between 6.5 and 14 feet high,” said a spokesman for Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, “and posed a huge obstacle to our team.”

Roni is still missing.
