The Brotherhood Ride reaches Bay St. Louis to honor fallen first responders

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (WLOX) – A sight worth seeing as we crossed the Bay St. Louis Bridge on Wednesday.

More than 20 police officers and firefighters from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Kentucky rode bikes to honor first responders who lost service in their communities.

Hattiesburg Police Officer David Matos says, “Our shirt here says ‘Never Forget.'” That’s our motto because, for example, when Deana and Tate were murdered, it’s all fresh for the first few years, then it kind of disappears . So this group comes a few years later to tell the family, ‘Hey, your loved one hasn’t been forgotten.'”

Those drivers started early Wednesday in Alabama and made stops along the way in Pascagoula, Ocean Springs and Gulfport.

As they reached the bay, everyone gathered to remember Sergeant Steven Robin and Officer Branden Estorffe, the two officers who lost their lives two years ago.

While the ride may be tiring, it’s these officers’ memories that keep them pedaling.

Officer Matos says, “We’re starting to get tired and exhausted, but we can see the names on the back of the jerseys of the riders in front of us.”

All proceeds from the ride will go to the families of the first responders who lost their lives.

The Brotherhood Ride heads to Slidell on Wednesday evening and begins riding in Louisiana tomorrow.
