Heart-pounding video shows the dramatic rescue of a man on a railway line

A man is lucky to be alive after he fell from a ledge onto train tracks and was rushed to safety by Seattle police just seconds before a speeding train roared past.

Seattle police said that around 9:15 p.m. on Oct. 7, officers responded to reports of a man sitting on a ledge above the train tracks near 2nd Avenue and East Jackson Street.

According to police, the man was in a mental health crisis.

When officers arrived, they spoke to the 57-year-old man and attempted to get him off the ledge back to safety.

As officers spoke to the man, police requested that all incoming trains stop, but one train had already arrived.

At some point, the man slipped from the ledge and fell nearly 25 feet to the rock-covered surface below. He suffered serious injuries that prevented him from moving.

As a high-speed train approached, officers rushed across the tracks from the lower platform to rescue the man.

In fact, one officer risked his life and was able to get the man to safety in less than a second.

The man suffered multiple fractures, police said. He was treated at the scene by the Seattle Fire Department before being taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.
