Former NBA star attacks Lakers over Bronny James experiment: ‘They’re not really serious’

As the NBA season approaches, one of the main storylines is the tandem of LeBron and Bronny James, as the two will become the first father-son pair in NBA history to attend a game together.

The expectation is that LeBron and Bronny will play together and make history at some point on opening night, when the Lakers host the Timberwolves on Tuesday.

Many people have criticized this plan as Bronny James has struggled so far in pre-season. These include former NBA players, most recently former NBA center DeMarcus Cousins.

What did DeMarcus Cousins say about Bronny James?

Cousins appeared on FanDuel’s “Run It Back” show on Wednesday and when asked about the Lakers’ plan for Bronny James, he didn’t mince his words.

“As far as the Lakers actually go, I don’t know, I take that as a sign that they’re not really serious,” Cousins said. “Given the way their season ended last year with high expectations, I expected more from them in terms of execution…they had a lot of concerns last year that I don’t think were really addressed.”

Cousins was sure to praise Lebron James’ work off the court, as the veteran has made an impact in many areas beyond basketball.

“I love everything [LeBron] stands for,” he said. “I think what Bron is doing with his legacy as a businessman and everything that comes with that, I think is a beautiful thing.”

Cousins played for seven teams in his 12-year career, most recently for the Bucks and Nuggets in the 2021–22 season. Last year in Taiwan, Cousins played basketball for the Taiwan Beer Leopards.

Bronny James, 20, has appeared in all four of the Lakers’ preseason games so far, averaging 11 minutes per game. But he only got four points in four games and failed to score in two.

James’ struggles have made him arguably the NBA’s worst preseason player so far, as he has a field goal percentage of 12.5% and has yet to shoot a three-pointer.

Los Angeles still has two preseason games left, so James still has a chance to end training camp on a high note. Still, his performance hasn’t inspired even former NBA players to believe he’s ready for the season.
