Wallace-Dothan hosts the “SIM Clinic” for area first-graders

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – Wallace Community College-Dothan’s Health Sciences Simulation Clinic is back in action.

The workshop, better known as the “SIM Clinic”, will take place from October 14th to 18th.

WCCD welcomed approximately 600 area first graders from eight elementary schools to the clinic.

With the help of superheroes, children learned about nutrition, exercise, emergency response, safety, hygiene and more.

From traveling through tunnels designed to simulate breathing tubes to dancing under a balance bar with anatomy quizzes to seeing live surgery and asthma inhalers in action, these first graders experienced a variety of different areas of healthcare.

The clinic not only inspires the next generation of doctors and nurses, but also helps children feel safe and comfortable in the healthcare setting.

“Kids this age are so influential,” says WCCD’s Jennifer Godwin, who runs the clinic. “When they’re in that environment and they realize that health care isn’t scary, because for so many kids, their experiences with health care have often been scary.”

When children walk through the front doors and into the superhero lobby, Godwin hopes they are inspired, confident and ready to conquer the world that lies ahead.
