The Jets agree to a deal to acquire Davante Adams from the Raiders

Davante Adams has his new home.

The New York Jets have agreed to acquire the disgruntled wide receiver from the Las Vegas Raiders, reuniting him with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Both teams confirmed the news on Tuesday.

The Jets are sending a conditional third-round pick in next year’s draft who could become a second-rounder.

NFL Network was first to report the trade. Adams reportedly flew to New York on a Red Eye flight this morning and underwent a physical exam to complete the deal.

The 31-year-old Adams immediately bolsters the Jets’ offense, which was inconsistent in the first half of the season. The three-time All-Pro joins Garrett Wilson to give Rodgers two No. 1-caliber wide receivers to throw to. He complements fellow receivers Mike Williams, Allen Lazard and Xavier Gipson, tight end Tyler Conklin and running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen. However, according to FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Williams is expected to be shopped.

Adams, who had missed the Raiders’ last three games with a hamstring injury, told the team he wanted to leave Las Vegas — and the team was willing to honor his request.

And now he’s back with Rodgers, the quarterback he caught passes with for eight seasons in Green Bay.

The deal came less than 12 hours after the Jets’ 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills, a game in which Rodgers threw a Hail Mary just before halftime but also for the second straight time on New York’s final drive was intercepted. It was a game marked by penalties, mistakes and missed opportunities on offense.

“It’s frustrating,” Rodgers said. “I’m here to win these games, but we have to pay attention to our details. It’s little things every time.”

The trade also caps a turbulent last seven days for the Jets. Two days after the loss to Minnesota in London, owner Woody Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was hired as his interim man. Ulbrich then demoted offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and replaced him with passing game coordinator Todd Downing on Wednesday.

And now the Jets have made a big deal to bring in Adams, one of Rodgers’ best friends and favorite teammates.

Adams’ departure from Las Vegas was expected after reports surfaced that he no longer wanted to be there — and the Jets immediately became a likely landing spot because of his relationship with Rodgers.

During his weekly appearance on the “Up & Adams Show” two weeks ago, Adams said he hadn’t heard from Antonio Pierce since the Raiders coach apparently liked a social media post about a possible Adams trade.

That was the first sure sign that a split could occur, although an Adams trade has long been speculated, as he has made several statements for more than a year. This included the clear frustration he showed in the Netflix documentary series “Receiver,” which also featured Adam’s season.

At nearly 32 years old, Adams remains one of the NFL’s top receivers, as he executes precise routes and catches passes even when playing on two teams. Last season he caught 103 passes for 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns. It was his fifth 1,000-yard season in six years, broken only by the 997 yards Adams had in 2019.

He caught 18 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown in three games this season.

Rodgers has completed 61.8% of his passes for just 1,387 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions through the first six games. New York ranks 22nd in total offense and 23rd in scoring through the first six weeks as the team is off to a 2-4 start following a loss to the AFC East rival Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh following their Week 5 loss due to their early season struggles and named quarterbacks coach Todd Downing as play-caller over offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett to boost their offense.

Adams, who turns 32 in December, has missed the Raiders’ last two games with a hamstring injury. It was previously reported that the injury was viewed as a week-to-week issue, which would potentially allow Adams to play his first game with his new team this weekend. In the Raiders’ first three games, he had 18 receptions for 209 yards and a touchdown.

Adams has two seasons remaining on the five-year, $140 million contract he signed with the Raiders upon his arrival in 2022. However, his contract expires after this season and there is no guaranteed money on his contract for the next two years.

The Raiders acquired Adams in March 2022 for a first-round pick and a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
