Emteq Labs introduces the world’s first emotion recognition glasses

The patented, science-based technology precisely measures facial expressions, eating habits, attention and physical activity, enabling transformative insights into emotions and behaviors with profound impact across a wide range of applications

BRIGHTON, United Kingdom, Oct. 15, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Emteq Labsthe leader in wearable emotion recognition technology, today announced the upcoming launch of Sense, the world’s first emotion recognition glasses. In parallel with the launch of Sense, the company is pleased to announce the appointment of Steen Strand, former head of Snap Inc.’s hardware division, as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Over the last decade, Emteq Labs – led by renowned surgeon and facial muscle expert Dr. Charles Nduka – leader in developing advanced technologies to capture facial movements and emotions. This data has significant implications for health and well-being, but has never been available outside of a laboratory, healthcare facility or other controlled environment. Now, Emteq Labs has developed Sense: a patented, AI-powered eyewear platform that delivers real-life, real-time, lab-quality insights. This includes comprehensive measurement and analysis of the wearer’s facial expressions, eating habits, mood, posture, attention level, physical activity and other health-related metrics.

“Our faces reveal deep insights into our minds and bodies. Since founding Emteq Labs in 2015, we have been on a mission to improve lives and health outcomes through a deeper understanding of our emotional responses and behaviors,” said Dr. Charles Nduka, Founder and Chief Science Officer of Emteq Labs. “Our proven, groundbreaking Sense glasses allow us to look inwards instead of outwards. Wearers will look to the future to see how subtle, nearly invisible factors can influence long-term health and well-being like never before.”

Emteq’s Sense glasses feature non-contact OCO sensors that detect high-resolution facial activations at key muscle locations, as well as a downward-facing camera for instant logging of food intake. The collected data is analyzed using proprietary AI/ML algorithms and securely transmitted to the Sense app and cloud platform. The user has full control over the data and can share it with researchers, trainers, coaches or clinicians with consent.

The powerful insights Sense delivers are having a transformative impact on weight management and mental health, as well as broader healthcare applications, consumer sentiment, augmented reality and more.

Science-based technology to solve critical health problems

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 billion people in the world live with obesity and about 970 million people worldwide live with a mental disorder. Emteq’s platform helps address these critical health issues by enabling a deeper understanding of everyday behaviors, decisions and the emotions that drive them.

A current one Peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Medical Internal Research found that Sense accurately tracks everyday food intake and eating behavior, overcoming major limitations of traditional self-reporting methods such as manual food logs. This research confirms the effectiveness of Emteq technology for precise nutritional monitoring, essential for successful interventions to promote healthy lifestyles.

Additionally, Research published in Frontiers in Psychiatry The journal showed that Emteq’s platform can distinguish between depressed and non-depressed people compared to current gold standard diagnostic methods. By effectively assessing affective behavior in remote environments – such as home, office or school – Sense is able to significantly improve the diagnosis and monitoring of chronic mental and neurological disorders such as depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder and more to improve.

“Having spent my entire career at the intersection of innovation and consumer products, I can confidently say that Emteq will transform the smart glasses landscape and, more importantly, improve and save lives,” said Steen Strand, CEO of Emteq Labs. “Healthcare applications have driven the rise of wearables, and glasses are the next frontier. Emteq will make the most compelling case yet for smart glasses – proving that they can significantly improve your health.”

Prior to joining Emteq, Strand led Snap Inc.’s hardware division, SnapLab, where he was responsible for the Spectacles line of augmented reality glasses as well as the company’s hardware-related investments and acquisitions. “Emteq’s technology will transform how we see ourselves and create powerful use cases that will soon drive the adoption of AR glasses,” Strand continued.

Emteq Labs’ Sense development kit will be available to commercial partners tackling a wide range of applications starting in December. For more information, see www.emteqlabs.com.
