A 35-year-old Brazilian woman became a police officer to bring justice to her father, who was brutally murdered at the age of nine. Gislayne Silva de Deuswho spent more than two decades seeking justice has now tracked down and arrested her father’s murder. Deus’ father, Giraldi Jose Vicente de Deus, was shot dead in February 1999 over a 20-pound debt, Metro reported.

The incident occurred at a local bar where Vicente, a supermarket owner, was playing pool with a friend when Raumundo Alves Gomes, one of his suppliers, and the murder convict demanded payment of the debt. Vicente offered to settle the charges with a freezer, but Gomes refused, leading to an argument between them. According to Nova1 (a Brazilian news outlet), Gomes, who left the bar after the argument, came back with a gun and shot Deus in the head.

Gomes was arrested and brought to trial; He was later sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2013. However, he appealed and avoided imprisonment. In 2016, the court rejected his final appeal and issued an arrest warrant, but he went into hiding and evaded arrest.

With the aim of finding Gomes, Gislayne studied law at the age of 18 and later joined the police. Driven by her determination to bring her father’s murderer to justice, she took on various roles throughout her years of service. While working in Homicide, she worked diligently to track down Alves Gomes, eventually locating him on a farm in the Nova Cidade area, near Boa Vista, where he was hiding. He was arrested on September 25th.

After the arrest, Gislayne shared her goal of arresting the murderer and putting him behind bars. Speaking to local media, she said: “When I was a prison guard, I always imagined that the murderer would arrive there to serve his sentence.”

Almost 25 years after the brutal murder, she confronted the convict (60) and told him: “You are here because of me. They will pay now,” Metro reported.

She said: “When I saw the man responsible for my father’s death finally wearing handcuffs, I couldn’t hold back the tears. It was an explosion of emotions that turned into tears of relief, as it seemed that day.” My father was an honest and hardworking man who helped us study and helped us with homework. He was always very close to us and looked after my sisters. We lost him, what happened could have easily taken us in a different direction, but our mother always taught us to go the right way.

Gomes’ conviction was upheld by a judge on September 26, 2024 and he was sent to prison for 12 years.
