The annual clash between Michigan football and Michigan State football is one of a dozen traditional rivalry games protected by the Big Ten Conference in the newly expanded league, and we now know exactly when the repeat will take place in 2024.

The Big Ten announced Monday that the No. 22 Wolverines (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) will host the Spartans (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) on Saturday, Oct. 26 7:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network in Week 9. Michigan, which lost the last time it took the field in Week 6, is coming off a bye this week and is scheduled to visit No. 21 Illinois on Saturday.

MSU, also coming off a bye, hosts Iowa on Saturday, which has lost twice, both to teams currently ranked in the top 12 in Iowa State and Ohio State.

The last time these teams met, Michigan completely dismantled Michigan State, marching to East Lansing and winning 49-0; It was the biggest shutout in the rivalry in more than 50 years. The bust came just days after news first broke of an alleged illegal sign-stealing scheme by Michigan that drew attention for the rest of the season.

The year before, in 2022, UM defeated MSU 29-7 in the Big House, which was soon overshadowed by a riot in the Lloyd Carr Tunnel as a handful of Michigan State athletes got into separate fights with individual Michigan players. Eight MSU players were suspended and seven players were charged with misdemeanors.

The late start at UM will be MSU’s fifth straight night game and sixth this season. The Spartans will play Purdue for a seventh time (Nov. 22, 8 p.m.) and have three additional kickoff times yet to be announced.

“Night games are what they are,” MSU coach Jonathan Smith said Monday morning in East Lansing. “We have no control over kick-off times, so you have to approach it knowing when the kick-off is. It’s really about the end of the game, right? So if you start late, you’re late to the game. And so is the processing time, try to emphasize the recovery time. You do a really good job on Sunday. It makes a difference if you kick at 7:30 a.m. the next day.

“We have no control over it. You’d like a bit of variety, but we’ll line up and play whenever they let us.”
