The Coxsackie-Athens School District cancels the remainder of the college football season

The remainder of the 2024-25 varsity football season has been canceled in the Coxsackie-Athens School District.

In a joint letter to the community Friday, the school’s principal and athletic director said there were not enough qualified players to meet eligibility requirements set by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

According to the letter, the coaching staff works with student-athletes to engage them in alternative forms of training and development. They are still discussing the next steps for the program.

READ THE FULL LETTER BELOW:

Dear Coxsackie-Athens CSD families, teachers and staff,

After serious consideration, the Coxsackie-Athens CSD and the athletic department have made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the 2024-25 college football season due to a lack of eligible participants who do not meet New York State Public High School Athletic Association requirements fulfill .

The decision was not made lightly, but the challenges we face this year have made it the most responsible course of action for the well-being of our student-athletes and our program.

We appreciate the commitment of the players and the support of their parents. Our coaching staff works with athletes to engage them in alternative training and development opportunities and give them an opportunity through this process. Following this difficult decision, consideration will begin immediately on the next steps for the program.

Sincerely,

Randy Squier Curt Wilkinson

Superintendent of Schools, Athletic Director
