Oct. 14 (UPI) — An arrest has been made in connection with the brutal murder of a septuagenarian on Friday. Authorities say he was killed by two men who gained entry to his home in Michigan’s affluent Rochester Hills neighborhood by posing as utility workers.

Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, was arrested and is in police custody in Shreveport, Louisiana, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in Michigan said in a statement Sunday.

He was arrested about 4 p.m. Saturday by officers with the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana, who spotted a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle linked to the Michigan home invasion traveling south on Interstate 49 from Arkansas.

The suspect, who was arrested without incident after a traffic stop, has been charged with murder and other crimes, the sheriff’s office said in a statement, adding that it is seeking his extradition from Louisiana.

According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, Hernandez has multiple warrants out of Ohio charging him with armed robbery, in addition to the murder warrant out of Oakland County.

Michigan authorities accuse Hernandez of being one of two suspects who posed as DTE Energy employees last week to gain entry to the home of 72-year-old Hussein Murray.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the two suspects attempted to enter the home in the upscale Rochester Hills neighborhood Thursday evening, claiming there was a gas leak, but were denied entry.

The two suspects returned to the house Friday and were allowed inside. Murray accompanied them to the basement, where they supposedly had to look for the leak.

Murray’s wife, also 72, called police shortly before noon and officers were dispatched to the home where they found the woman with her hands bound with duct tape.

According to the statement, she told police that her husband, who owned a business in Wayne County, had been kidnapped, but his body was later found in the basement by officers during a search of the home.

“Due to the gruesome nature of the injuries, it was not immediately clear whether he had been shot or bludgeoned to death,” the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said.

The unidentified woman was briefly hospitalized, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office had released video footage of the suspected burglars as they asked the public for help identifying the men. The sheriff’s office accuses Hernandez of being the man seen in the footage wearing a bright fluorescent construction worker’s vest and face mask while holding a clipboard.

In the 9-second video clip, the suspect can be heard speaking directly to the homeowners via the doorbell’s Ring camera.

“We are DTE. We’re looking for gas leaks,” he says, before flashing the documents attached to the clipboard.
