Josh Jacobs is appealing his $45,020 fine – his first since the NFL warned him and a short list of other players before the season that future safety violations could result in a suspension.

The penalty resulted from a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter of the game when Jacobs lowered his helmet to make contact with Titans safety Quandre Diggs. No flag was thrown after the tackle on the play.

Jacobs wasn’t the only player fined for improper helmet use in Week 3, as Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb was fined $22,511 after he: The team’s 25-game loss to the Baltimore Ravens had been attacked.

The rule States that a player commits a foul if he lowers his head and makes “forcible contact” with an opponent with his helmet. Players would also violate the rule if they use any part of their helmet or facemask to make forceful contact with an opponent’s head or neck.

However, the rules do not prohibit “accidental contact with the mask or helmet in the course of a conventional tackle or block against an opponent.”

Although it appeared that Jacobs caused contact with his helmet, it’s still a hefty fine for a play that didn’t result in a penalty at the time it occurred. The veteran running back now has the highest fine for a single play out of anyone so far in the 2024 season, according to Spotrac.

According to the NFL’s fines and appeals schedule, improper use of the helmet is punishable by a fine of $22,511 after a first offense and a fine of $45,020 for a second offense.

After spending the first five years of his career with the Las Vegas Raiders, Jacobs joined the Packers in March on a four-year contract worth $48 million.

His first season in Green Bay started off strong, as he accumulated 278 rush yards on 62 carries in three games.

Jacobs also added 25 yards and a touchdown as a receiver, helping the Packers to a 2-1 record despite starting quarterback Jordan Love being sidelined the past two weeks with a knee injury.
