NY Mets vs. Dodgers live score, postgame updates from NLCS Game 1

LOS ANGELES – The Mets were in a hole Sunday night before they even settled into Dodger Stadium.

Kodai Senga was willing to go as long as coach Carlos Mendoza would allow him to come off the 60-day injured list in his second appearance. It turned out that Senga was his own worst enemy in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.

Senga recorded just four outs and gave up three earned runs as the Mets suffered a 9-0 loss to the Dodgers in the opening game of the NLCS at Dodger Stadium in front of 53,503 fans.

With Senga’s control putting the Mets behind, Mendoza used four different relievers to get the final 20 outs. The Dodgers also scored three more runs against David Peterson in the fourth inning and three against Jose Butto in the eighth inning.

Meanwhile, the Mets’ offense stumbled out of the gate in their first NLCS game since 2015. Jack Flaherty, who held them hitless in the first four innings, then went seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts and two hits and two walks allowed.

The Mets, who had a penchant for dramatic comebacks in the 2024 playoffs, couldn’t overcome an early deficit in Game 1.

With the Dodgers on their way to a win in Game 1, here’s our analysis of their win over the Mets:

Mookie Betts opened the game with a three-run double

All of the former National League MVPs have now taken action in their own right, driving in runs in Game 1 for the Dodgers.

With the bases full and one out against Jose Butto, Mookie Betts threw a sharp ground ball past a leaping Mark Vientos at third base that allowed three runs to score and give the Dodgers a 9-0 lead. The Dodgers benefited in the inning from an error by Pete Alonso, who threw high to second base with a runner on first base early in the frame.

Jack Flaherty shut out the Mets over seven innings

After trailing by six runs in four innings, the Mets were unable to respond against the Dodgers’ Jack Flaherty.

Flaherty finished the game with seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out six Mets batters. He retired the last eight batters he faced.

Jesse Winker’s baserunning gaffe costs Mets potential run

Jesse Winker got the Mets’ first hit of the game against the Dodgers’ Jack Flaherty to lead off the start of the fifth inning.

But Winker ran into trouble on a bloop single to center field as he rounded second base and stopped when Kike Hernandez set up a looping single from Jose Iglesias. Hernandez’s throw went to second and Winker was caught between the bases and thrown to third. The Mets remained scoreless on consecutive fly balls and trailed the Dodgers 6-0.

The Dodgers continue to make gains against David Peterson

Shohei Ohtani makes his impression in Game 1.

After belting an RBI single in the second inning to knock the Mets’ Kodai Senga out of the game, Ohtani helped drive in a run by hitting a hanging curveball from David Peterson off the wall. Tommy Edman scored after a bobble from Starilng Marte.

Ohtani scored two batters later on a two-out RBI single off Freddie Freeman, extending the Dodgers’ lead to 6-0.

Edman also added his own RBI single as part of a four-hit rally against Peterson.

Jack Flaherty completes the first move in the Mets lineup

In his first postseason start of 2024 against the Padres, Jack Flaherty gave up three earned runs in the first two innings. Flaherty cleaned up his offense against the Mets, using 46 pitches to strike out the Mets’ first nine batters in order. He struck out four batters in the first run of the Mets’ lineup.

Midway through the third inning, the Dodgers lead the Mets 3-0.

Carlos Mendoza removed Kodai Senga after four outs

The Mets were hoping Kodai Senga would be able to throw three innings in his second start back from injury. Senga had major problems with his control and lasted only 1⅓ innings against the Dodgers.

Shohei Ohtani tagged Senga for an RBI single after the Mets right-hander issued his fourth walk of the game, extending the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0. At that point, Mendoza turned to Reed Garrett to record the final two outs. Ohtani was caught stealing in the final of the second round.

Kodai Senga has problems leading and was suspended for two runs

After catching a ground ball from Shohei Ohtani, the Mets’ Kodai Senga struggled to find the strike zone and walked three batters in a row. The Dodgers made him pay when Max Muncy hit a two-run single to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Senga threw only three hits in his first 16 throws.
