Baker Mayfield responds to the Longhorns putting the flag on the jersey

Everyone loves rivalry and everyone loves Baker Mayfield (well, I think that part is debatable). However, if you watched this year’s edition of the Red River Rivalry, you noticed something aimed squarely at the current Tampa Bay Buccaneers passer.

After No. 1 Texas defeated No. 18 Oklahoma 34-3 on Saturday, the Longhorns’ players took their flag and raised it at midfield, as is customary for winners on opposing soil.

However, this time it was different. It was not only a dig at Sooners fans, but also at a certain Oklahoma alum who apparently had Texas’ number when he played against them.

The Texas players placed their flag on a Baker Mayfield Oklahoma jersey at midfield, which immediately went viral online after the game.

In his postgame press conference following Tampa Bay’s 51-27 win over rival New Orleans, Mayfield was asked by reporters for his thoughts on the viral moment. His answer couldn’t have been better than a response to the Texas program.

“[I’m] β€œJust a kid from Austin, Texas, who went to Oklahoma, won his last two Red River games and was rent free in their minds for almost a decade,” Mayfield quipped. β€œSo, yeah, it’s a good feeling.”

Mayfield had a 2-1 record against Texas when he was under center at Oklahoma from 2014-17. His Sooners team outscored the Longhorns 91-88 in those three games.

Before Texas fans start throwing around their program’s success stats over the past few years, Mayfield still has the edge. He appeared in two College Football Playoff appearances compared to the one at Texas, and Oklahoma has appeared in nine straight bowl games since Mayfield first started in Norman.

I get it, the rivalry will never be satisfied, but pettiness is what we live for and the back and forth between Texas and Baker has added a juicy new chapter to the saga.
