Massive Pokemon leak reveals game source codes and plans for upcoming titles

Pokemon is now the highest-grossing media franchise, and that’s no surprise given its scope. But on the other hand, with so many projects scattered across the media landscape, if there is a leak, it’s an even bigger mess. And it looks like that’s exactly what happened over the last week.

Game Freak, the developer of the Pokémon games, confirmed in a statement that it was indeed a hacker attack, but the company noted back in August that this had happened. The statement also served primarily to address the disclosure of confidential information from current and former employees.

Following the statement, leaks of the Pokémon IP appear to have surfaced, appearing in the usual places on Reddit, and information about the upcoming Pokémon Legends: ZA, the 10th generation proper, as well as a Splatoon-like multiplayer game, has been revealed.

Along the same lines is an upcoming film that’s in development hell and may be a sequel to Detective Pikachu. In addition to films, there are also details about an original TV anime, which is independent of “Pokemon Horizons” and has a season long and 12 episodes.

Conversely, beta character designs and source codes from older games were also leaked, including Heart Gold and Soul Silver. Currently, neither The Pokemon Company nor its three affiliated companies have acknowledged the major leak, at least not publicly. It remains to be seen what impact this will have on the franchise’s immediate future.
