Oregon football receiver Traeshon Holden apologizes for spitting on Ohio State cornerback

EUGENE – Oregon receiver Traeshon Holden has publicly apologized for spitting on Ohio State cornerback Davison Igbinosun during Saturday’s game.

Holden, who was sent off after the incident in the second quarter of Saturday’s game, apologized via social media to his Oregon teammates, coaches and fans, as well as to Igbionsun.

“I would like to sincerely apologize for my actions during our last game,” Holden wrote. “My actions were not only disrespectful, but also a betrayal of the values of sportsmanship, integrity and respect that I strive to embody as a student-athlete. To my family in Oregon: I am truly sorry for letting you down. They showed me the importance of teamwork, discipline and respect, and my actions in that moment did not reflect these core principles. I understand that this has negatively impacted our team’s reputation and I deeply regret putting us in this situation.

“To Ohio State, I sincerely apologize for my behavior. It was completely unacceptable and a momentary lapse in judgment. I would like to emphasize that this incident does not reflect my personality or the values that I want to represent. Going forward, I am committed to making meaningful changes, not only in managing my emotions during competition, but also in being a better example for my teammates and the broader community. I am determined to demonstrate growth and maturity both on and off the field, and I hope to regain the trust of those I have let down.

“This incident was a valuable lesson and I am committed to becoming a better player, teammate and positive role model in our community.”

Holden had one catch for 32 yards before the incident, which resulted in Oregon’s No. 3 receiver being penalized for flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct and being ejected from the game with 11:31 remaining in the second quarter.
