Feminist musical produced by Hillary Clinton to end its Broadway run after money problems

According to the New York Times, “Suffs,” a feminist musical by former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is ending its Broadway run due to money problems.

The decision was announced Friday evening by the producers of the musical, which is about the women’s suffrage movement. According to Securities and Exchange Commission filings reviewed by the Times, “Suffs” was capitalized with $19 million in gross capital – but that amount has not been recouped.

For the week that ended October 6, the musical grossed just $679,589, which is typically not enough to sustain a Broadway show with a large cast. The show debuted in April, but struggled to fill all seats just two weeks after its official performance.

This is shown by data from the week of May 5th Clinton-produced piece only reached 81% capacity across eight performances this week.

Competing with “Romeo & Juliet,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Moulin Rouge!” The Musical,” “Suffs” placed in the bottom 23% of all 35 Broadway shows for the week of May 5.

By the end of its Broadway run, “Suffs” will have logged 24 previews and 301 performances – slightly fewer performances than the average Broadway musical.

The final performance of “Suffs” on Broadway will take place on January 5th. The musical will then go on a national tour starting in Seattle in September 2025, the Times reported.

The musical was produced by Malala Yousafzai alongside the former first lady. In July, a group of radical protesters interrupted a performance of “Suffs,” calling the musical a “betrayal of the next generation of feminists.”

“We reject this again warmly white feminism” says the group’s website. “This action is brought to you by an autonomous group of radical, anti-racist, queer feminists.”

Despite its relatively short run for a Broadway musical, “Suffs” received positive reviews from critics and won the Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Original Score in June. Clinton had referenced her 2016 defeat as she introduced an appearance at the awards show.

“I’ve been on many stages now, but this is something very special,” Clinton said before the actors are introduced.
