The Texas Longhorns players don’t respect Baker Mayfield seven years later for some reason

The Red River rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma began well over 100 years ago when the two programs first faced off in 1900. This rivalry has continued to gain momentum since 1929, marking the beginning of an annual duel between the two teams, who have now competed against each other a total of 120 times.

Although both programs have had their moments, Texas has the best bragging rights with 64 wins and Oklahoma with 51 wins – five games that ended in a tie.

Some of Oklahoma’s best years in recent memory can be attributed to none other than Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. In 2017, the two-time Heisman Trophy winner infamously raised a Sooners flag at midfield at Ohio Stadium after leading his team to a road win over the Ohio State Buckeyes.

A lot of time has passed since then. But apparently the Texas football program hasn’t forgotten the antics of its old rival.

On Saturday, after the Longhorns’ 34-3 win over the Sooners in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, TX, linebackers Anthony Hill Jr. and Barryn Sorrell took out a Baker Mayfield Oklahoma jersey and pierced it with a Texas one at midfield -Flag.

Any questions about this incident should be not so much about why these Texas players felt the need to do this – that seems obvious – but rather: Why did they decide to do it now? Baker Mayfield is currently playing in his eighth season in the NFL since being drafted first overall in 2018.
