Fair or poultry? Chicken version of the iconic Big Mac makes local debut

A chicken version of McDonald’s iconic Big Mac will launch next week, the company announced.

The Chicken Big Mac consists of two tempura-breaded chicken meatballs with the traditional Big Mac toppings (special sauce, lettuce, cheese on a sesame seed bun).

The original sandwich was created in 1966 by Michael “Jim” Delligatti, who began test marketing at his Uniontown McDonald’s restaurant in April 1967, McDonald’s said.

McDonald’s will begin selling its chicken Big Macs on Thursday.

It was tested in Miami in 2022 and also sold in international markets, including the United Kingdom.

“We are excited to pay homage to one of our most iconic menu items, the Big Mac, with the launch of the Chicken Big Mac,” said Tariq Hassan, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer.

The Big Mac Museum, featuring a giant Big Mac, is located at M&J Management’s McDonald’s restaurant on Route 30 in North Huntingdon.

The Big Mac was released nationwide in 1968. Today, approximately 550 million Big Mac sandwiches are sold in the United States each year. It is sold in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Delligatti’s legacy was celebrated by Allegheny County on August 4, his 106th birthday, when the county celebrated “Big Mac Day.”
