Prime Video's 10 Best Movies - Here are the 3 that are worth watching

Prime Video’s top 10 has changed a lot in the last few weeks. After being relatively stale over the summer months, several new entries have emerged on the streaming service’s most-watched list that are making a splash, and the new additions include a brand new No. 1 pick in Prime Original “Killer Heat.”

Unfortunately, the mystery thriller received a less than stellar reception, and the film currently sits at a relatively dismal 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. A high place in Prime Video’s top 10 is therefore no guarantee of quality. It’s not uncommon for a highly skippable movie to make the service’s top 10 list.

That’s why I’m picking out the films in Prime Video’s top 10 (as of Friday, October 4th) that deserve your attention. These three films range from a suspenseful romantic drama to a sci-fi blockbuster and each should be on your watchlist now…

“Challengers” (2024)

“Challengers” is a sports drama, but it is more exciting than most action films. Set in the world of professional tennis, former world champion Art (Mike Faist) is on a losing streak. To snap him out of his panic, his coach (and wife) Tashi (Zendaya) enters a small tournament to regain his confidence. But the plan backfires when Art comes face to face with his former best friend Patrick (Josh O’Hungry). Connor), who also happens to be Tashi’s ex-boyfriend. Talk about embarrassing!

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, “Challengers” combines romantic and sporting drama and succeeds thanks to three powerful performances. Yes, Zendaya is the star, but Faist and O’Connor are also excellent. Furthermore, the non-linear narrative structure ensures that the story is captivating from the start, and as the viewer jumps forward and backward in time, the complex relationship between these three characters is satisfactorily explored (and the ending is pure genius). “Challengers” is a gripping drama, whether you can swing a tennis racket or not.

“Gifted” (2017)

“Gifted” is one of my favorite comfort movies. This comedy-drama is the perfect example of a feel-good film that will lift your mood after a long day. It also allows Chris Evans to be his usual charismatic self, and with young Mckenna Grace by his side, “Gifted” infuses a youthful energy that will delight even the most clinical viewer. A challenge: watch this movie and don’t smile at the end.

“Gifted” focuses on Frank Adler (Evans) and his young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace). After the death of Frank’s sister (and Mary’s mother), he has become the child’s de facto guardian. However, his desire for a regular childhood is jeopardized when Mary begins to demonstrate mathematical abilities far beyond her young years. This leads to Frank’s strong-willed mother Evelyn (Linsday Duncan) arriving on the scene and demanding that Mary attend a school for gifted young people.

“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (2023)

I have to be honest and say that I didn’t like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts when I saw it in the theater last summer. Neither did critics, who gave the film a poor 51% Rotten tomatoes. However, this action blockbuster was well received by fans. Viewership on the same review aggregate site is an impressive 91%. So I’m willing to accept that my opinion is somewhat of an outlier. That said, if you like the usual Transformers franchise crap, you’ll probably like this movie.

Set before Michael Bay’s 2007 Transformers film, Rise of the Beasts is a ’90s crowd-pleaser inspired by the popular Beast Wars line of transforming toys. Starring Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, it follows the expected formula as a group of human characters become embroiled in the never-ending war between the Autobots and Decepticons. Added to the mix this time are the Maximals, a clan of Transformers who look like animals on Earth like a gorilla and an eagle.

If you’re up for lots of CGI-heavy spectacle, this film is for you, but be warned that the actual plot gets a bit lost in the action.
