Dolphins sign former star Ravens LB Tyus Bowser after losing Jaelan Phillips for the 2024 season

As the saying goes: “When it rains, it pours.” The Miami Dolphins are definitely doing well. After the team lost Tua Tagovailoa to a concussion in Week 2, the defense was hit hard by the loss of star linebacker Jaelan Phillips.

Phillips revealed that he had suffered a season-ending knee injury that would require reconstructive surgery. This is the second consecutive season-ending injury for Phillips, as he also suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2023.

Losing Phillips will be tough on the Dolphins defense. The young linebacker put up 6.5 sacks in 2023 before the Achilles injury and was just as disruptive in 2024. Phillips had a sack, a tackle for loss and two quarterback hits in limited time.

The Dolphins progressed Phillips slowly early in the season, even after he healed from his torn Achilles tendon within nine months. However, he is now lost for the season.

To make up for the loss of Phillips, the Dolphins signed linebacker Tyus Bowser from the Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks.

Miami Herald columnist Omar Kelly said: “Passed rusher Jaelan Phillips to the reserve/injured list and signed linebacker Tyus Bowser from Seattle’s practice squad to the active roster.”

Instead of the Dolphins signing Bowser to the practice squad, he will be immediately added to the active roster. That means he will start in Week 5.

Bowser is off the Seahawks practice squad. Interestingly, Bowser was activated when Seattle beat the Dolphins 24-3 in Week 2.

Now Bowser has a chance to continue his quarterback-terrorizing ways with the Dolphins. Before joining the Seahawks, the veteran linebacker was a force on the Ravens’ defense.

Bowser was drafted by the Ravens at No. 47 in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Houston. Bowser had a respectable rookie season, securing three sacks, one interception and 11 total tackles.

Bowser would get better with each season. His most successful season came in 2021, when he posted seven sacks, 59 total tackles, eight tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.

The hope is that Bowser can get back into form with the Dolphins. He missed the entire 2023 season after suffering a knee injury before the start of the season and re-aggravating it. He was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list.

Bowser was released by the Ravens in March 2024 and signed by the Seahawks in August.

The Dolphins will bring back Bradley Chubb at some point, but he isn’t ready to return yet. Bowser can help the defense tremendously if he is anywhere near what he was in 2021.
