Steam’s turn-based RPG fest offers discounts and demos that you can download and then play, in that order

“Turn-based” games, as we know, are all derived from Turn, the strategy game about a coin-digging dog that was released for BBC Micro in 1987. Previously, all actions in games simply happened at the same time and as quickly as the player or players could do them.

Today, many games are turn-based, from Tactics Ogre Reborn to Age Of Wonders 4 to chess. To celebrate their order, Steam is currently hosting a turn-based RPG fest with discounts and demos for “turn-based games where you get stronger with every battle.”

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is 40% off, Age Of Wonders 4 is 35% off, the recently released Tactical Breach Wizards is 10% off, Octopath Traveler 2 is 40% off, and XCOM2 is an absurd 95% off. I’ll stop here because I’m obviously missing the synonyms for “on sale.”

These genre-specific fests tend to attract fewer pre-release demos than other Steam events, especially near the more demo-focused Next Fest, which takes place in a few weeks. The festival’s most downloaded demos so far are recent releases like Multiverse Loot Hunter and Backpack Battles, as well as recent classics like Dragon Quest 11 S and the aforementioned Octopath Traveler 2.

Still, browsing the menu drew my attention to Silence Of The Siren, which came out in early access just a few days ago. It comes from the developers of Project Hospital and is a science fiction strategy game in the style of Heroes Of Might & Magic. Looks neat! You can download the demo on the store page.

The turn-based festival runs from now until October 7th. Gymnastics developer Stephen “Turn” Turner would be proud.
