11-year-old from Milwaukee jumps two stories to save his family from a fire

An 11-year-old boy jumped two stories from his burning house to get help. The fire occurred at 35th Street and Courtland Avenue near Hampton Avenue on Milwaukee’s north side. The family is now recovering. It was the middle of the night. A mother and her four sons were sound asleep. “I start to smell fire and smell the fire. Something said, ‘Stand up and look down the stairs,'” Acasha Jackson said. “I look down the stairs. I see the reflection of the fire on the back door in the back wall, and I see thick smoke climbing the stairs, and I ran to my boys.” Jackson said the smoke was thick. One son acted quickly. The 11-year-old told WISN 12 News that he jumped from the second floor balcony and ran across the street to his cousin’s house to get help. Serkajouse Jackson is the oldest of the four boys. “Oh, there was only one thing on my mind: to help and save my brothers. Save my brothers. That’s the only thing I thought about. That’s why I jumped off the balcony,” he said. Firefighters rescued his family within minutes. After being treated for a leg injury, the 11-year-old was reunited with his mother, who said his nickname was “King.” “That’s our man in the house. He helped us with everything. That’s how it is.” “It wasn’t a surprise when he came into action,” said Acasha Jackson Family is grateful to be alive but is looking for a new place to live. The Red Cross is helping this family recover. There is also a GoFundMe page that was started as the family looked for a new home. The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but Milwaukee police said the fire investigator is investigating the matter.
