  • In December, Tom Brady will auction five pieces from his luxury watch collection at Sotheby’s.

  • His collection includes pieces from brands such as Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe.

  • The value of a custom-made watch is estimated to be between $400,000 and $800,000.

Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has a passion for more than just football.

On Dec. 10, the retired 15-time ProBowler will auction five of his watches at Sotheby’s, along with other “treasures” from his football career.

“I have been so fortunate to have such an amazing journey in my career and these watches and collectibles truly capture those unforgettable moments and all the hard work that goes into them,” Brady said in a press release.

The auction comes amid fluctuations in the luxury watch industry. After a surge in interest during the COVID-19 pandemic, the industry experienced a period of decline. According to WatchCharts data as of September 30, the overall market index fell 6.1% from 2023 but recovered 0.6% last month.

While Sotheby’s has the third-highest watch sales among auction houses with sales of over $72 million so far this year, this is a significant decline from the auction house’s $155 million in watch sales last year, according to EveryWatch.

Although the fourth quarter of 2024 is just beginning, Brady’s auction could be part of a growing trend to revitalize the luxury resale market through celebrity partnerships. For example, in June 2024, Sotheby’s auctioned 11 watches from Sylvester Stallone’s personal collection, including his Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, which sold for $5.4 million.

“It is a great honor for us to work with Tom in curating his retail sale, showcasing a selection of timepieces as well as some of his prized sporting treasures from his football career,” Richard Lopez, senior watch specialist at Sotheby’s, said in his press release.

Here are the five pieces from Brady’s collection heading to auction. The estimated value is between $12,000 and $800,000, according to Sotheby’s.

The first Audemars Piguet watch is estimated to be worth between $400,000 and $800,000.

This Royal Oak Flying Tourbillon from Audemars Piguet features several nods to Brady, including his name set with caliber-cut and baguette-cut diamonds, the number seven in Roman numerals as a nod to his record Super Bowl victories, and his signature on the rotor Sotheby’s.

The watch is made of white gold and also features “a bezel set with baguette diamonds,” according to Sotheby’s press release.

Brady wore the watch during his Netflix special “The Greatest Roast of All Time: The Roast of Tom Brady” in May 2024.

This 2023 collaboration between Richard Mille and 22-time Grand Slam singles champion Rafael Nadal is best known for its innovative “butterfly rotor.”

For those unfamiliar with watches, a rotor is a small weight in the watch that moves when the wearer moves, creating energy that winds and powers the watch.

What’s special about the “butterfly rotor,” according to Richard Mille, is that it “offers the wearer the ability to vary the rotor geometry themselves,” allowing them to perform various activities such as sports without causing damage or excessive winding.

Other personalities who have worn pieces from Richard Mille and Nadal’s collaboration include Real Madrid’s Jay-Z and Antonio Rüdiger.

Brady’s rose gold Patek Philippe Nautilus is estimated to be worth $180,000 to $240,000.

According to WatchCharts, the Nautilus is the most expensive Patek Philippe collection, selling on the secondary market for 60.4% above retail price.

Brady’s version, Nautilus reference 5980/1R-001, was discontinued in early 2024, increasing its appeal.

The Rolex reference 228396TBR could fetch between $80,000 and $120,000 at auction.

Since its introduction in 1956, the Rolex Day-Date has been a popular choice, worn by world leaders like Lyndon B. Johnson, investors like Warren Buffett, and athletes like Tom Brady and Michael Jordan.

Brady’s is reference 228396TBR, which, according to Sotheby’s, features a “platinum-clad meteorite dial complemented by a baguette diamond-set bezel and diamond hour markers.”

The final watch in Brady’s collection is the IWC Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Edition “SFTI,” which could cost between $12,000 and $18,000.

He famously wore this watch while celebrating his seventh and final championship win at the 2021 Super Bowl Boat Parade in Tampa Bay.

Other items from Brady’s football career are valued at an estimated $100,000 to $500,000.

Sotheby’s will also auction memorable pieces from Brady’s playing career, such as the jersey he wore in his final game at the University of Michigan, his NFL Combine jersey and a helmet he wore during his final season in the NFL.

“The collection is truly unparalleled; the stories they tell, the authenticity they embody and their historical significance elevate them beyond mere collectibles,” said Brahm Wachter, head of modern collectibles at Sotheby’s. “These items are real pieces of sports history.”
