WASHINGTON – Who won Tuesday night’s vice presidential debate: Ohio Sen. JD Vance or Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz? It depends, according to a new survey.

The POLITICO/Focaldata snap poll, conducted among 902 adults with a weighted sample of 525 likely voters, found that 72% of Democrats believed Walz won the debate, while just five percent believed Vance won. 23 percent of those surveyed did not watch.

On the contrary, 71% of Republicans thought Vance won the debate, while four percent thought Walz won. 24 respondents did not watch.

The poll shows the stark divide between Republicans and Democrats in support for their party’s candidates at the top of the ticket. When asked who would be a better vice president, 92% of Democrats chose Walz and 91% of Republicans chose Vance.

In the “other” category, which includes independents, 34% of voters surveyed believed Walz won the debate, while 25% chose Vance. 44 percent of voters thought Walz would be the better vice president, while 36 percent chose Vance.

The poll conducted Oct. 1 after the debate has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
