British acting legend Rupert Everett has revealed his dream of playing Professor Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.

Last year it was confirmed that JK Rowling’s books would be adapted for the small screen, but further details were kept top secret.

While some stars were quick to rule out appearing on the TV show, including Jared, the son of original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris, there were rumors about who might take on the lead roles once played by Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint .

And now My Best Friend’s Wedding star Rupert has put his name into the mix.

Appearing on This Morning, the 65-year-old said of his latest role as Emily in Paris: “I always want to try to do things that I can do better than anyone else.”

When Ben Shephard asked if he would play Dumbledore in the new TV series, Rupert replied: “That’s my other dream!” But that’s an uphill battle too. Maybe, who knows?’

The Shrek star added: “The reason I want these roles is because that’s the kind of acting I could really do.”

He then pointed to his theater background, which came to fame in a West End production of Another Country in the 1980s.

The role was originally played by Harris before Michael Gambon took over the role after the second film.

The Harry Potter TV show has already sparked controversy over Rowling’s involvement, with some fans planning to boycott the series over her views on the trans community and women’s rights.

Meanwhile, some fans have responded to the casting call, declaring that the castings will be open to performers of all ethnicities, genders and backgrounds, which has sparked shameful outrage for all the right reasons.

HBO Max confirmed last year that the series was officially in the works, saying, “Your Hogwarts letter is here.”

“Max has ordered the first ever #HarryPotter television series, a faithful adaptation of the legendary books. #StreamOnMax.’

HBO also announced that the series will span a decade, with each season based on each of the seven books in the series and featuring an entirely new cast.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
