The high school cancels the remainder of the football season because there are not enough players available

OXFORD, Neb. (KSNB/Gray News) – A high school in Nebraska says it has made the difficult decision to cancel its remaining football games for the season.

Southern Valley Schools announced Tuesday that it has canceled the remainder of its 2024 high school football season due to a lack of available players.

The cancellation affects both the varsity and junior varsity teams.

The district said the decision wasn’t made lightly, but they couldn’t in good conscience put the few players remaining in a difficult position.

“Numerically, we didn’t have enough children available to continue to bring a safe product to market,” said Josh Lanik, activities director for Southern Valley Schools. “We had a total of 10 or 11 healthy bodies in grades 9 through 12.”

Lanik continued: “We as an administration spoke with the coaches and made the decision this morning to cancel the remainder of our season. For safety reasons we had to make this decision. Some of our college kids aren’t quite ready for college and we wouldn’t be doing them any favors. In good conscience we couldn’t leave these kids out there on a Friday night.”

The football team is currently ranked 0-5 and 6th in Class D1, District 9. They were scheduled to play at Hi-Line on Friday at 7 p.m

Their other scheduled games included hosting North Platte St. Patrick’s on October 11th and Dundy County Stratton on October 18th.
