Former Nevada teacher sentenced to nine years in prison for disseminating child abuse material

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (KOLO) – A former Las Vegas teacher has been sentenced to approximately nine years in prison for distributing child abuse material.

Alexander Scott Derringer, 38, was employed as a second-grader in Las Vegas. Derringer will also serve a 20-year prison sentence after a court found he distributed the material on the social media messaging app Kik.

The court found that between April 11, 2021 and August 23, 2021, Derringer distributed more than 130 child abuse files through two accounts on Kik. Of those files, approximately 59 were removed from two cell phones, both of which belonged to Derringer.

According to the Justice Department, these files were among approximately 2,584 images and 269 videos of child abuse found in total on both phones. According to the Justice Department, the images and videos showed minors as young as infants.

The Henderson Police Department was able to identify Derringer after receiving two CyberTips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children indicating that an individual using an IP address associated with Derringer’s residence uploaded the material and shared it with other users and groups had shared.

Derringer pleaded guilty in June of this year to one count of distribution of child pornography.

“Mr. “Derringer abused his position of public trust to take advantage of those we expected him to protect,” said Special Agent in Charge Spencer L. Evans of the FBI’s Las Vegas Division. “Every time child pornography appears on the Internet Re-victimizing a child is one of the most ruthless crimes we investigate, and today’s sentencing is a reminder that the FBI and our partners will work tirelessly to protect children from abuse and exploitation protect.”
