Fact-checking the Walz-Vance debate: Live updates

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance will face off in their first (and possibly only) vice presidential debate of 2024 on Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. EDT.

Snopes fact-checkers will closely follow the 90-minute CBS event and analyze candidates’ statements in real time. The newsroom is prepared to reject falsehoods and political spin and point out when what Walz and Vance are saying is true. We will post these updates here.

In the meantime, we’ve compiled popular rumors about Walz and Vance that have surfaced since Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump picked them as running mate. They range from alleged statements by Vance, such as whether He once said parents should have a greater say in US democracy than non-parents or described Trump as “America’s Hitler,” to claims that Walz allegedly lied about his Military record and high school Coaching career.

Starting at 9:00 p.m. EDT, you can watch the debate with us here thanks to NBC News’ simulcast. Or tune in to the CBS broadcast, live streams on CBS News 24/7 or Paramount+, or simulcasts hosted by networks like PBS and USA Today.

CBS anchors Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan will moderate the debate. The rules prohibit candidates from bringing notes or props on stage, interacting with staff during commercial breaks and giving their answers for longer than two minutes. According to CBS, moderators Vance and Walz will give one minute for counterarguments. And unlike the presidential debates, the candidates’ microphones will not be muted when their opponent speaks, although “CBS News reserves the right to turn off the microphones.”
