Who is Claudia Sheinbaum, the first female president of Mexico?

As Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, awaits her inauguration in Mexico City on Tuesday, October 1, curiosity about her professional and political background has reached an international peak.

As a standard bearer for the Movimiento Regeneración Nacionalor Morena Party, her political career was marked by politics consistent with what many voters in Mexico saw as a major left-wing populist political affiliation.

In a campaign that began March 1, then-candidate Sheinbaum ran as a staunch reformist and publicly stated that he would continue many of President Andres Manuel López Obrador’s progressive policies. Many of Sheinbaum’s proposed social programs during the election campaign revolved around economic issues such as a minimum wage and the introduction of social programs, like many that are already common in the United States.
