Calls to save cooling towers as Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station closes

Now a petition has been launched to preserve some of the cooling towers as monuments to the country’s industrial past.

Mr Graham said on X (formerly Twitter): “Some may think they are ugly. I find her majestic. Concrete cathedrals.

“I was allowed to stand inside and film the second Sherwood series. I’ve never stood on the ground like this before.

“I would be happy if future generations could also stand in it. But inexplicably they all leave – all of them…”

He suggested that Ratcliffe-on-Soar could be home to a national museum of the Industrial Revolution, “welcoming travelers to the birth of the modern world”.

The Twentieth Century Society, which campaigns to save industrial heritage, has called for the towers to be listed.

Most towers have a status that prevents this, but Ratcliffe currently does not, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
