Eric Adams slams alleged collusion between government and mainstream media, asks judge for ‘consequences’

Lawyers for embattled New York Mayor Eric Adams are calling for sanctions against the Justice Department, which they accuse of illegally leaking information about its investigation into the Big Apple boss to the mainstream media.

His lawyers wrote that the leaks had been going on for about a year, up until the day before the charges became public knowledge, when sources confirmed the charges to media outlets, including Fox News.

“In fact, the day before the indictment was unsealed, the New York Times reported – and even before the mayor’s lawyer was informed of the indictment – that the mayor had been indicted as part of a federal corruption investigation, people familiar with the matter said, ‘and that.’ ‘[f]“Prosecutors were expected to provide additional details on Thursday,” Adams attorney Avi Perry wrote in court documents released Tuesday.

New York Mayor Eric Adams promises to govern, not resign

Because of the secret nature of the grand jury process, only a handful of people could have known about the indictment against the mayor before it was overturned last week, Perry wrote. These include the members of the grand jury itself, the court staff and the Justice Department prosecutors.

“But of that, only the prosecution team was aware of the government’s plan to provide more details the next day (as it did in a self-congratulatory press conference),” Perry continued. “It is therefore clear that the public prosecutor’s office is responsible for the leak.”

They are demanding a hearing on the alleged misconduct and appropriate consequences in order to achieve the long-term dismissal of the charges.

Adams faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted on all counts in an indictment that experts are calling an “opening salvo.” Since the investigation against a number of city hall employees and campaign workers is ongoing, there could be further charges.

Adams’ team repeatedly asked prosecutors to “stop the leaks” to no avail, the filing said. They are now asking the court to hold a hearing on the matter.

The mayor also described the investigation as retaliation for his criticism of the Biden-Harris administration’s border policies.

Adams had previously blamed the White House for the refugee crisis in New York City, which had overwhelmed the White House’s protection system. The influx of illegal immigrants coincided with a spike in robberies in the Big Apple, city police said earlier this year.
