Starship Troopers is getting its first ever VR game as the legendary actor returns

Starship Troopers: Continuum has just been revealed and not only is it the first-ever VR game for the franchise, but Casper Van Dien also returns to provide the voice of the legendary Johnny Rico.

Complementing Meta Quest 3, 2 and PSVR 2, Starship Troopers: Continuum features an all-new story set 25 years after the events of the first film. Continuum is a co-op shooter at its core, while still offering plenty of single-player gameplay for single players.

As excited as I am to see the return of Johnny Rico, he will not be the character you control. Instead, you take on the role of a PsyCommander, a soldier who has access to upgradeable psychic powers in addition to traditional insect-destroying firearms.

Casper Van Dien has this to say about his involvement and the character we take control of: “In Starship Troopers: Continuum, Rico is a poster child for FedNet’s “Klendathu 25” celebration. I help recruit new meat for the meat grinder, and you are the meat. You play Mobile Infantry Troopers as you fight against the opposing Arachnid force. Thousands will die on both sides. You are disposable. Mobile Infantry does the dying, and that’s what this game is all about.”

Continuum is the latest in a recent series of Starship Trooper game releases, alongside Extermination and Teran Command. Also worth noting is the inevitable success of Helldivers 2, which is heavily inspired by the original 1997 film.

However, there is already some concern in the VR community as developer XR Games is accused of mishandling the recent release of Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded, which was considered a disaster upon release. Despite the issues, the studio is committed to fixing the game through regular and frequent updates.

Starship Troopers: Continuum releases October 17th for Meta Quest headsets and October 31st for PSVR2. Although the trailer states that the footage was shot on PC, there are no plans to release it on Steam, according to UploadVR, which confirmed this with XR Games.

In my opinion, if the tone and feel of Starship Troopers translates so well to VR, then Continuum should be one of the best Meta Quest 3 games you can play, both solo and in co-op. If you’re dying to play this game but don’t have one of the best VR headsets yet, it might be worth waiting for the Meta Quest 3S release date later this month.
