Runway just got a major upgrade - video-to-video is in full swing

Runway, the leading artificial intelligence video generator, has just updated its Turbo model, adding the ability to create vertical videos for sites like YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok, as well as video-to-video, allowing you to add effects using AI to your existing clips.

Video-to-video was introduced two weeks ago in the standard Runway Gen-3 Alpha model, which is much slower at generating a clip but is slightly better in terms of motion and visual effects.

The advantage of Turbo is its speed. In my own testing, I managed to create a clip almost as quickly as the duration of the video. So in just over 10 seconds I had 10 seconds of video.

We’re still waiting for text-to-video to arrive on Turbo, but the new update also brought several new features, as well as features previously reserved for the slower model.

What’s new in Runway Turbo?

Runway is gradually adding features that we had in Gen-2, as well as new concepts and approaches to video generation made possible thanks to changes in the way Gen-3 works compared to the previous generation of models.

With the latest update we get clip extensions, lip sync, and a new time editing feature that lets you change the speed of a clip, reverse it, or trim it down to the best parts.

The new ability to create vertical video content perfect for social media is exclusive to the Turbo model. For some reason this was not enabled for Gen-3 Alpha.

Overall, the new features give you much more control over the video generated by Runway, including improving the speed of a clip and the ability to start with either a video or an image.

Video-to-video is a great way to generate exactly what you’re looking for, as it adds a layer or style to your work – for example, turning you into a 3D character.

I found video-to-video in Turbo to be a bit hit and miss. I showed him a quick video of me moving a toy card and it turned half my hand into a tiger, but it’s not bad and with better instruction you can get really impressive results.

My favorite new feature is the time-related updates. Sometimes you create a clip and it seems to go backwards. Now you can rotate it backwards without having to load a video editor.

The other impressive update is extensions. In normal mode these can take a while, and since they can vary more from the original than you’d like, it can be a hassle to get exactly what you’re expecting.

Fast iterations make a difference, as Turbo allows you to build ten different extensions in the time it takes you with Alpha.
