The conservative leading candidates James Cleverly and Tom Stimmehat have commented on Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.

Speaking from Birmingham, where the party is holding its annual conference, Cleverly, the former foreign minister, said he supported Israel’s ground operation.

“Israel has the right to defend itself,” he told Sky News. “Hezbollah is causing enormous damage, not only to Israel, but also to the Lebanese people.”

virtuehat, the shadow security minister, told LBC Radio: “I am also very aware that what Lebanese Hezbollah has done to this beautiful country is absolutely terrible.”

“So you will forgive me, I have great compassion for my Lebanese friends and I really feel for them, but I am very happy that Hezbollah is being eliminated.”
